I Corps During The Vietnam War

Those who served in South Vietnam during the war were aware that the country was divided into four tactical zones or corps. These were often identified on maps and documents using Roman numerals. The northernmost area was designated as “I Corps” and was represented with the Roman numeral for one. It was officially “One Corps,” but most people called it “Eye Corps.”

The I Corps Tactical Zone was the location for operations of NSA/NSF DaNang. I Corp began at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in the north, and included the five northern provinces of South Vietnam that including: Quang Tri Province, Thura Thien-Hue Province (also called Thua Thien), Quang Nam Province, Quang Tin Province, and Quang Ngai Province.

DaNang was the location for the headquarters of Naval Support Activity DaNang (1965-1970) and Naval Support Facility DaNang (1970-1972), but there were 7 Detachments associated with NSA/NSF DaNang that were important to the success of Naval Support Operations in I Corps. The Detachment locations included Cua Viet, Dong Ha, Tan My, Hue, Phu Bai, Chu Lai, and Sa Huynh.

Please refer to “The Detachments” page in the “History” menu item for more about the Detachments.
