* Lighterage is an operation that transfers cargo between ships of different sizes. It is sometimes a cargo transfer at sea between a large vessel and a smaller vessel (known as Lighter Barges or Lighter Ships). It also refers to the transport of cargo from pier to vessel or from vessel to pier where ports are too shallow for ships to berth directly at the pier.
